Today is the International Day of Remembrance for the Chornobyl Disaster.
Exactly 37 years ago on 26 April 1986, there was an accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. There were two explosions at the fourth reactor of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. Part of the buildings collapsed and a large fire started. Massive amounts of radioactive substances were released into the atmosphere.
Hundreds of firefighters and emergency workers tried to put out the nuclear fire. Many of them later died of radiation sickness. More than 100,000 residents of nearby towns were evacuated after the catastrophe.
Today we remember the heroism of nuclear plant workers, liquidators, firemen, medics, and all the people involved in the liquidation of the accident consequences.
